Coahoma qualifies strong contingent for regionals
KERMIT – Building on the momentum of their District 3-3A title, the Coahoma Bulldogettes delivered a dominant performance at the District 3 & 4-AAA Area track and field championships on Saturday, April 18, at Walton Field. The girls' team won the overall meet championship with 121 points, comfortably ahead of second-place Presidio.
The day was highlighted by historic performances and repeated dominance in the field. Kohen Grantom turned in a record-breaking performance in the wheelchair division, setting new school records in both the 100m (15.31) and the 400m (51.96). Grantom also took first place in the wheelchair shot put with a mark of 26' 4"
Unofficially, Granton broke the state record on both the 100m and 400m at the meet. In order for it to be official, the CHS sophomore must race those times at the state track and field meet. Currently, the state record for both events (100m, 15.41, and 400m, 53.77) were set by Tyler Buysee of Gunter in 2017, according to the UIL 2025 track and field program.
The Bulldogettes’ championship run was fueled by gold-medal finishes across multiple disciplines. Leading the charge was Bree Lewis, who won her third consecutive area championship in the shot put with a toss of 37’ 7 ½”. Madisyn Renteria repeated as area champion in the triple jump with a distance of 34’ 11 ¾”.
In the pole vault, Coahoma claimed the top two spots with Addison Woodard clearing 10’ 0” to take first and Gabriella Cox earning second with the same height.
On the track, the girls' 4x400m relay team took gold with a time of 4:09.53. Other silver-medal qualifiers for the girls included Addison Woodard in the 300m hurdles (48.77), Aziah Shifflett in the 400m dash (1:01.56), and the 4x200m relay team (1:49.27). Rounding out the regional qualifiers for the girls were the 4x100m relay team (51.96), Bree Lewis in the discus (110' 0"), and Oakley Lewis in the discus (103' 7 1/4").
Individual Bulldogs also earned their spots for the next round of competition. Emmett Alexander became a back-to-back area champion in the pole vault by clearing 11’ 0”. Javen Mendoza qualified in two events. The CHS senior finished second in the long jump (20’ 7 ¾”) and third in the high jump (5’ 10”).
The Bulldog 4x200m relay team took third place with a time of 1:33.52 to punch their ticket to regionals, while Andre Rushin earned his spot with a second-place finish in the 100m dash in 11.32 seconds.
The top four finishers in each individual event and relay now move on to the Region I-3A meet set for Friday and Saturday, May 1–2, 2026, at Elmer Gray Stadium at Abilene Christian University in Abilene.
