Three students will represent Coahoma High School this Friday at the Region I-3A UIL Academic Meet hosted by Abilene Christian University.

Lillian Orosco, Elizabeth Mashburn, and Kami Dyer advanced to the regional level after securing top-three finishes at the district competition held March 25 in Denver City. Orosco led the CHS academic team with a first-place finish in News Writing and third place in Headline Writing. Dyer placed second in Literary Criticism, and Mashburn earned third in Editorial Writing. Their performances anchored the CHS journalism team, which finished third overall in the district standings.

Additional journalism support came from alternates Makenna Calvert, who placed fourth in Editorial Writing, and Kyler Pherigo, who finished sixth in Feature Writing. Several other academic team members earned top-10 district honors:

  • Persuasive Speaking: Zylee Lozano (fifth, alternate) and Lexie McWilliams (sixth, alternate).

  • Social Studies: Robert Armstrong (eighth).

  • Current Issues and Events: Donald Gallegos (ninth).

  • Calculator Applications: Daniela Lopez (ninth).

Coahoma High School finished sixth out of nine teams with 93 total points. The academic team is coached by Jennifer Turnbow, Gina Orosco, Chelsea Wells, Sadie Sims, and Rhonda Fujiwara.

The team’s overall points standing was bolstered by strong performances in early-season competitions.

CX Debate results

In February, the duo of Zylee Lozano and Sydney Maxwell finished in fourth-place in the District Cross-Examination (CX) Debate meet in Denver City.

The 2025-2026 national policy debate resolution required students to research and debate the following: "Resolved: The United States federal government should significantly increase its exploration and/or development of the Arctic."

The topic challenged students to explore complex issues ranging from environmental conservation and indigenous rights to international trade routes and national security.

CX Debate is a rigorous format where two-person teams must be prepared to argue both sides of the resolution using logical analysis and documented evidence.
