Student powerlifters pose with their medals

COAHOMA, Texas — Coahoma High School is celebrating a banner year for its powerlifting program as four student-athletes advanced to the state level this season.

Senior Aiden Bryand will lead the Bulldogs into action this week as he prepares for the boys' state championships, following a strong performance by three Bulldogettes at the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association’s state meet in Edinburg, Texas.

Bryand is set to represent CHS this Friday, March 27, at the Texas High School Powerlifting Association (THSPA) State Meet. Competing in the 181-pound equipped division, the senior earned his spot after a dominant third-place finish at the regional meet in Post.

Bryand enters the state competition on the heels of a career-best performance, posting a personal record total of 1,350 pounds. His individual lifts include a 545-pound squat, a 335-pound bench press, and a 470-pound deadlift.

The state meet will be held at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene, where Bryand looks to cap off his high school career on the state podium.

The Coahoma girls’ program recently returned from the THSWPA State Meet in Edinburg, Texas, held March 19. All three qualifiers placed within the top 15 in the state, with two Bulldogettes securing elite top-10 finishes.

Junior Lillian Orosco finished 10th in the state in the 148-pound unequipped class with a 665-pound total. She set a personal record in the bench press and deadlift. In the equipped divisions, junior Esela Vasquez earned a 9th-place finish in the 165-pound class with an 820-pound total, and junior Areyanna Loe finished 15th in the 148-pound class with a 730-pound total.

While the program celebrates the senior leadership of Bryand, the future remains bright for the Bulldogettes. With Orosco, Vasquez, and Loe all competing at the state level as juniors, Coahoma is positioned for a powerhouse season in 2027.
