Grayson Glidewell has been interested in news since the third grade, and it served him well this past Saturday at the Region I UIL Academic virtual meet.

The Coahoma High School senior placed third in the Current Issues and Events competition and qualified for the 3A UIL State Academic meet, which will be held virtually on May 1.

Current Issues and Events test competitors on their basic knowledge of current state, national, and world events and issues and consists of a multiple-choice questionnaire and one essay.

Glidewell competed in the same event at state competition his sophomore year when he placed ninth out of 25 contestants. The UIL cancelled the academic season in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This will be Glidewell’s second state academic competition this spring. In March, Glidewell and his partner Aubrey Green pitted their skills against the best CX debaters in the state. At state, UIL judges ranked Glidewell sixth in the individual 3A Speaker Awards category.

Following graduation in May, Glidewell will attend the University of Texas in Austin to pursue a career in law.
