Students playing golf

Despite chilly temperatures and high winds, Ryan Shifflett had an outstanding day on the links at the Coahoma High School Invitational two-day golf tournament held at the Comanche Trail Golf Course in Big Spring.

He finished second in the medalist standings with a score of 79 over 18 holes after winning the one hole playoff as a tiebreaker against Ryan Weeks of New Home on Monday.

His fellow teammates had a solid outing for the day. Tanner Purcell shot 93 while Rance Redden penciled in a round of 98. Aaron Turnbough and Rowdy Atkins also fared well. Turnbough carded a round of 105 while Atkins shot 114. Playing in the individual medalists standings, Nick Gonzales carded a round of 107.

Overall, the Coahoma Bulldogs golf team placed fourth with a score of 375 out of a crowded field of 11 competing schools. Garden City No. 1 took the top spot with a score of 351 edging out New Home No. 1 by four strokes at 355. Forsan No. 1 finished third with a score of 369. New Home No 2 rounded out the top five teams with a score of 413.

On Tuesday, the girls faced similar if not more windy conditions at the course, but the adverse weather didn’t lessen the competition. Kaci Henson of Forsan took the top spot in the medalist standings with a round of 97, but second place ended in a four-way tie. After a scorecard playoff, Kadie Dalton of Garden City was awarded second and Makayla Chavez of Coahoma took third. Both shot a round of 100. Also tying with the same score were Providence Dickson of Coahoma and Claire Fuchs of Garden City.

Chavez and Dickson’s strong showing for the day helped lead the Bulldogette team to a third place finish out of six competing schools with a mark of 437.

Fellow Bulldogettes Zoie Joslin and Hartlie Smithie performed well. Joslin fired off a round of 118 and Smithie finished one stroke behind at 119.

In overall girls team standings, Forsan No. 1 placed first to win the tournament with a score of 408. Garden City ended two strokes at 410. New Home, Stanton, and Forsan No 2 placed fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively with marks of 465, 474, and 476.
