KERMIT — Serena Dobbs and Christian Everett punched their tickets to the Texas High School’s Women’s Powerlifting Association’s (THSWPA) state meet after qualifying at regional contest held on Saturday.
“I’m proud of all my powerlifters, and I am very lucky to get to coach them,” said CHS powerlifting coach Coley Dobbs.
After recovering from an injury that occured last year, Serena Dobbs performed personal bests on all three events — squat, bench, and deadlift — to earn fourth place out of 14 competitors in her weight class and a berth at state competition. The CHS sophomore squatted 240, benched 120 and hoisted 240 on deadlift for a total of 600 pounds of iron.
Everett qualified after finishing third in her weight class. She pumped a total of 550 pounds of iron at the meet. She lifted 195 on squat, benched 115 and hoisted 240 on deadlift. Everett was a 2020 state qualifier, but the meet was canceled because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I am very proud of Christian,” C. Dobbs said. “Getting a state qualifying total is no easy feat.”
Two-time state qualifier and three-time regional qualifier Cailey Glover ended her high school powerlifting career with a strong showing at the meet.
“She competed until the end and just missed her deadlift,” C. Dobbs said. “She has always been a leader and one to rely on. She will be greatly missed.”
Glover squated 325, benched 175 and hoisted 285 on deadlift for a total 785 pounds. She finished in seventh place in her weight class.
Rounding out the Coahoma powerlifting athletes was Zoie Joslin who placed 12th in her weight class. The first-year powerlifter squat 175, benched 80, and pumped 190 on deadlift for a total 445 pounds of iron.
“Zoie did great for her first year of powerlifting and qualified for regionals her first year of trying the sport,” Dobbs said.
The state THSWPA competition will be held on March 19-20 in Corpus Christi. This year’s coaches for the Coahoma powerlifting team are C. Dobbs, Dustin Glidewell, and Kelley Glidewell.
