MIDLAND — The Bulldogettes held off a late game rally by 6A Midland Lee to collect a 9-8 victory on Friday.
With two runners on base and one out, Lee’s Maci Johnson hammered a 3-RBI home run off the first pitch by MaKynlee Overton in the bottom of the seventh inning to bring Midland within one point of tying the game.
The rally was short lived as Overton was able to keep the damage to a minimum in the next two at-bats with a ground out and fly out to end the game.
After taking an early lead in the first two innings, the Bulldogettes trailed by two runs until a big fifth inning sent Coahoma ahead on the scoreboard.
Christian Everett started out Coahoma’s scoring run by drawing a walk with the bases loaded, which allowed Kenzi Canales to score. Next at bat, Brynn Rodgers walloped a fly ball to left field for a double sending Jocelyn Mendoza, Veda Cortez, and Everett over home plate (6-4).
A pair of home runs by Karleigh Burt and Overton in the sixth and seventh innings respectively gave Coahoma a three-run lead (8-5). Alexcia Munoz added the Bulldogettes last run with an RBI groundout, which allowed Everett to score.
Overton earned the victory. She allowed nine hits and eight runs over seven innings, while striking out four. She faced 39 batters, threw 132 pitches and got 71 strikes.
B. Rodgers went 1-for-2 at the plate and got one run, drew two walks, and had three RBIs for the day. Christian Everett was 1-for-3 and had two runs and one RBI.
Coahoma’s big batters went to work against Midland. Mendoza, B. Rodgers, Madison Rodgers, Makayla Calvio all hit a double during the game.
Next: Coahoma (5-4) heads to Monahans for a non-district game against the 4A Lady Loboes on Tuesday. The varsity game begins at 5 p.m. with the JV game to follow.
