Girls playing basketball

After an incredible season on the hardwood, the hard work of the Coahoma High School girls basketball team did not go unnoticed when it was time to unveil district honors.

Fresh off claiming a bi-district championship, eight Coahoma players landed on the 5-3A All-District team including MaKynlee Overton and Isabella Cox, who earned two of the district’s top honors.

Overton was named the district’s most valuable player. A  four year varsity member, Overton consistently led the Bulldogettes in points this season and was very effective in her position as the center.

Freshman I. Cox had a stellar first year for her high school basketball career. I. Cox, along with All-District first team honoree Kenzi Canales, provided key defensive pressure for the Bulldogettes this season. Her performance on the hardwood definitely drew the notice of area coaches, and they rewarded her with Newcomer of the Year honor.

Also earning plenty of praise were Julia Cox and Madison Rodgers. Both were named to the All-District first team.

Cox, a senior, served as point guard for Coahoma helping to lead the team to a berth in the area round of the State 3A playoffs. Rodgers was equally impressive on the court by using her quick reflexes to force turnovers all year long.

Sophomore Shae Lang and freshman Brynn Rodgers were named to the All-District second team. Junior Katelyn Johnson rounded out the honors for Coahoma with an honorable mention by the 5-3A District coaches.

Coahoma wrapped up the season with a 15-7 record and the Bulldogettes lost only two out of eight district games. Both of those losses were by one point. The Bulldogette team was coached by Jim Kinnear, who has taken Coahoma to the playoffs for the past two years. Jaime Bonner and Katheryn Shawver served as assistant coaches.
