Coahoma High School sophomore Kohen Grantom continues to redefine the limits of the track and field program. He delivered a performance at the recent Area 03-04 meet in Kermit on April 18, that reset school records and challenged longstanding state benchmarks.
Competing in the wheelchair division, Grantom broke his own school records in both the 100m and 400m events. He clocked a 15.31 in the 100m dash and a 51.96 in the 400m dash.
While the school records are official, Grantom’s times also unofficially eclipsed two UIL state records. According to the UIL 2025 Track and Field program, the current state records for the 100m (15.41) and 400m (53.77) were established by Gunter’s Tyler Buysse in 2017.
To officially claim the state titles, Grantom must replicate or improve upon these times at the upcoming UIL State Track and Field meet, May 14-16.
This record-breaking day is the latest milestone in what has been a standout high school career so far for the sophomore.
In December, Grantom was named to the 2025 USA Para High School All-American Team. He was one of only 45 athletes nationwide selected by U.S. Track & Field (USATF) for this honor. He was recognized for his excellence in the T54 wheelchair classification across multiple distances.
Grantom’s sophomore success follows a dominant freshman campaign where he earned two gold medals (100m, 400m) and a silver medal (shot put) at the 2025 UIL State championships. His performance last year earned him the title of Male Athlete of the State Meet for the wheelchair division.
Grantom will be back in action at the Region I-3A meet set for Friday and Saturday, May 1–2, 2026, at Elmer Gray Stadium at Abilene Christian University in Abilene.
