BIG SPRING, Texas — The Coahoma No. 1golf team of Lanson Moore, Boyd Cox, Aiden Olivarez, Jayden Henderson, and Ryker Smith is headed to the UIL regional tournament after finishing as the runner-up team at the District 3-3A Tournament at Comanche Trail Park.
The Bulldogs entered the final round on Tuesday, March 31, in second place and put together a strong team performance to hold their position, shaving 20 strokes off their opening-round score to finish with a two-day total of 648 (334-314).
The top two teams and top two medalists not on an advancing team from the district tournament earn a spot in the regional round. Coahoma finished behind district champion Compass No. 1, which posted a 609.
On the girls’ side, Coahoma finished its season with a comeback to capture the third-place bronze medal. Entering the final round in fourth place and trailing Crane by two strokes, the Bulldogettes surged ahead with a second-round 403. Their two-day total of 819 (416-403) was enough to overtake Crane by four strokes and secure a spot on the podium.
Lanson Moore led the charge for the Bulldogs, rebounding from an opening-round 80 to card a 74 on Tuesday. Moore’s 154 total placed him in a three-way tie for third in the individual standings.The CHS junior won the playoff against two Compass Academy golfers to claim the third-place individual medal.
Aiden Olivarez also showed significant improvement in the final round, firing a 77 to finish with a 163 total (86-77). Boyd Cox followed closely with a 164 (85-79), while Jayden Henderson finished with a 167 (83-84). Ryker Smith rounded out the regional-bound No. 1 team with a 182 (91-91).
The Coahoma No. 2 boys team took fifth place overall with a total of 702. Andyn Rodriguez paced the second squad, dropping 16 strokes in the final round to post a 78 for a 172 total (94-78). Other scores for the No. 2 team included Kavan Kaczyk (89-85—174), Jared Nieto (90-88—178), and Braxton Richters (97-85—182).
Layla Buchanan led the Bulldog girls' comeback with a consistent 200 (100-100), followed by Kinzlyn Kemper at 201 (95-106). Gabby Cox (110-99—209), Paisley Osborn (111-100—211), and Landri Phernetton (112-104—216) completed the team scoring.
Individually, Addison Woodard (110-109—219), Hadyn Musgrove (129-102—231), and Paityn Kilpatrick (121-118—239) represented Coahoma as medalists.
The Coahoma No. 1 Bulldog team will compete at the Region I-3A Championship on April 13-14 at Live Oak Golf Club in Abilene.
