Junior High students acting out a scene. All but one student is in blue paint

The Coahoma Junior High School One-Act Play cast and crew wrapped up their season recently with a public performance of their award-winning production, “The Girl Who Was Asked to Turn Blue.”

The performance followed a successful run at the UIL District 3-3A, Zone 1 competition held Dec. 3 in Denver City, where the company placed third overall.

Written by playwright Ev Miller, the play delves into the complexities of social conformity and individuality. The story follows teenager Tracey Logan, played by Jocelyn Sheppard, who unknowingly enters a world where everyone is blue and identified only by a number.

Throughout the production, Logan grapples with the pressure to conform to the "Blue" society or remain an individual. Number One, played by Reid Campbell, informs Logan that she must turn blue to remain in the community. He offers her a stark choice: assimilate or face ostracization and a life of solitude.

Miller wrote two endings to the script, both of which lend to the story's themes regarding the consequences of such choices. Under the direction of Katie Valencia, the CJH production incorporated both endings into their performance.

Several students received individual accolades at the district competition. Sheppard and Campbell were named to the All-Star Cast.

Joseph Delgado received the Outstanding Technical Crew Member Award.

Additionally, several students received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast recognition, including Landon Leggett as the Strange Boy; Stella Wolf as 911; and the "Blue People" ensemble of Abie Mejia, Alexia Lugo and Allayna Burrow.
