BIG SPRING — Last year’s state qualifiers Christian Everett and Cailey Glover started the 2021 high school powerlifting season with a strong showing at the Big Spring Steer Invitational on Saturday.

Everett, a sophomore, brought home the gold when she pumped a total of 470 pounds —  175 on squat, 90 on bench, and 205 on deadlift. Two-time state qualifier Glover hoisted a total of  715 pounds for a bronze medal. She had a 300 squat, benched 165, and pulled 250 on deadlift.

Kobe Cervantes led the boys team by bringing home a silver. The CHS senior had a three-lift total of 1,280 pounds of iron— 515 on squat, 305 on bench, and 460 on deadlift. 

Overall, Coahoma had eight lifters medal in their first meet of the season. Medalists included Serena Dobbs, Jasmine Ortiz, Reagan Chapman, Zoie Joslin, and Sean Striegler. 

Dobbs and Ortiz both placed third in their individual weight classes. Dobbs squatted 200, benched 105, and pulled 195 on deadlift for a total of 500 pounds. Ortiz lifted 425 pounds of iron. She had 175 on squat, 75 on bench, and 175 on deadlift. 

Chapman placed fourth in his weight class with a total of 480 pounds. Joslin and Striegler finished fifth in their individual classes with totals of 425 pounds and 920 pounds respectively.

The rest of the powerlifting crew fared well and helped both the boys and girls teams to six place finishes. For the girls team, Marianna Glover placed ninth in her weight class with 535 total pounds lifted, Delia Rawls was sixth with 555, Maci Green came in seventh with 535, Cayhill Lewis was eighth with 510, and Savannah Meacham finished 12th with 395. 

On the boys team, Grant Glidewell placed ninth with a three-lift total of 610 pounds. Isisah Eleda was 7th with 915, Nick Tutle came in 10th with 605, and Braidon Boaz finished 13 with a total of 645 pounds of iron pumped.  

Next: Coahoma heads east on Saturday for the Colorado City Invitational.
