Coahoma Cheerleaders performing

Coahoma High School invites the community to come out and Meet the Bulldogs to show support to our high/junior high school athletes and band students.

“Our kids have been working hard and giving us 100 percent for the past few weeks to get ready for another competitive year,” said Chris Joslin, Coahoma ISD Athletic Director. “I invite the community to come out and meet these phenomenal students.”

The event will begin at 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27, on the newly renovated football field of the Bill Easterling Memorial Stadium in Coahoma. The community will have a chance to meet and cheer for athletes playing football, volleyball, and cross country along with members of the award-winning Big Red Band and the Coahoma cheerleading squad.

The crowd will also have a chance to meet the 2018-2019 coaching staff and their families along with student trainers, ball boys and flag runners.

Although the official first day of school was Monday, athletes and band students have been hard at work with two-a-day workouts and night band practices since the beginning of August.

Last year, the Bulldog varsity football team went 7-4 for the season ending with a bi-district appearance against the Spearman High School Lynxes.

Taking over this year as the head of the football/athletic program at Coahoma ISD, Joslin hopes to keep that winning drive alive with another playoff appearance, and he is no stranger to winning football games on the gridiron.

For the past two years, Joslin was the offensive assistant football coach for the Rockdale High School Tigers. Last year, the Tigers went 13-3 for the season and clinched the 3A Division I state championship. He also spent 10 years on the coaching staff of Big Spring Steer Head Football Coach Phillip Ritchey. During that time, the Steers made six playoff appearances.

Although she is not a new face to Coahoma ISD, Jamie Bonner steps into a new position this year as Head Volleyball Coach for the Coahoma Bulldogettes. Previously, Bonner served as the assistant coach under Christina Cox, who stepped down this year to fully focus on serving as the high school principal of Coahoma High School.

Bonner, along with her assistants Sydney Upshaw and Katherine Shawver, lead a Bulldogette team with seven strong senior players on the roster.

Joining the coaching staff this year, John Michael Leggett takes over the CHS cross country program. Leggett replaces Byron Seal as head coach after Seal retired from education at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. Coach Leggett hopes to continue to foster state championship runners just as he did while coaching cross country and track in Big Spring.

Now beginning his sixth year as head band director for Coahoma ISD, John Landin and the Big Red Band are busy working hard to prepare their contest marching show. Under Landin’s leadership, the band has qualified three times for area marching contest and earned three sweepstakes awards. Although this is not a state qualifying year for 3A marching bands, Landin and the band have their sights set to bring home a fourth sweepstakes to decorate the trophy case.

Joni Lacefield is the sponsor for the hardest working cheerleading squad in West Texas, the Coahoma Cheerleaders. The cheerleaders will perform during the event.

“I hope everyone will come out and give some much deserved recognition for these hard-working students as they head into another competitive year,” Joslin said.
