Ryan Shifflett wins boys medalist honors


The Coahoma A boys golf team captured the 5-3A district title, and the girls team came in second at the tournament held at the Comanche Trail Golf Course on Wednesday.

The Coahoma A team shot a 381 – 378 - 759, and the girls team shot 426 – 408 - 834 during the two-day tournament. Both teams qualified for the Region I competition. 

Ryan Shifflett placed first in the medalist standings. The Coahoma High School freshman fired off an 86 – 92 – 178 after 36 holes, but he faced stiff competition from Crane’s Donny Bishop, who tied with Shifflett with a combined score of 178. The Coahoma High School freshman won the top seed after a playoff round.

Fellow Coahoma teammate, Ky Kemper also had an excellent showing at the tournament. He shot an 87 – 92 - 179 to finish third in the medalist standing. The rest of the A team fared well on the links and consisted of Tanner Purcell (107 – 93 - 200), Billy Bailey (101 – 101 - 202), and Rance Redden (109 – 111 - 220).

In the girls competition, Julia Cox led the team to second place. She carded 97 - 97 - 194 after 36 holes and finished fourth in the medalist standings. Also heading to region competition from the Coahoma girls team are Providence Dickson (121 – 100 - 221), Makayla Chavez (110 – 114 - 224), Zoie Joslin (111 – 107 - 218), and Isabella Cox (108 – 104 – 212).

Playing in the individual medalists category, Coahoma’s Hartlie Smithie had an outstanding day to finish off the season. She placed third out of nine competitors in her category with a score of  112 – 119 - 231. The Coahoma B boys team finished the day in sixth place. The team consisted of Aaron Turnbough (107 – 112 - 219), Rowdy Atkins (108 – 94 - 202), Nick Gonzales (114 – 112 - 226), and Chris Thurman (127 – 110 - 237).

The Region I-3A Tournament will be held at Shady Oaks Golf Course in Baird. The boys tournament is April 19-20, and the girls tournament is April 21-22.
