Boys playing basketball

Raheem Ashford’s performance on the basketball court this season earned plenty of notice by area coaches, and they remembered him when it was time to give out district honors. The Coahoma High School junior was named the 5-3A All-District Newcomer of the Year.

In all, eight Bulldog basketball players earned district accolades for their hard work this season.

A junior, Ashford was a strong weapon for the Bulldogs’ offense, and his success at post helped lead Coahoma to the bi-district round of the 3A state playoffs.

Isaiah Martin’s performance this year earned a spot on the All-District first team. Martin, a senior, brought boundless energy to the Bulldogs for the past two years as a guard.

The all-out hustle by senior D’Kota Harrison and freshman Ryan Shifflett also turned a few heads for their performance on the court. Both were named to the All-District second team.

Seniors Tony Hagins and Kolt Redden, junior Brysen Kerby, and freshman Billy Bailey received honorable mention honors.

Under the leadership of head coach Joe Mireles, the Bulldogs have seen post district play twice in the past three years. KJ Glaspie, Chris Arista, and Mike Martinez served as assistant coaches.
