Girls playing basketball

The Bulldogettes split a pair of games this weekend losing a road game against Borden County on Friday and earning a hard fought victory against Snyder at home on Saturday.

After two straight losses, Coahoma got its preseason back on track with a close 60-56 victory against the 4A Snyder Lady Tigers at the CES competition gym.

“We got ahead by the end of the first half and then we lost some intensity and allowed them to come back in the third,” said Bulldogettes Head Basketball Coach Jim Kinnear. “It’s a good trait for our girls to have that when we are down we can do things right, bring the intensity up, get the tempo back, regain the lead, and hang on to get the win.”

Senior Julia Cox led Coahoma with 20 points including three 3-point goals. MaKynlee Overton had 14 points, and Isabella Cox had 11 and nailed two three-pointers. Brynn Rodgers rounded out the top Coahoma scorers with seven points.

On Friday, the Bulldogettes set No. 10 Borden County Lady Coyotes back on their heels in the first quarter racking up a 10 point lead. However, the Lady Coyotes regrouped and nailed two 3-pointers and a field goal within the last minute of the first to end the quarter. When the two teams resumed after the short break, Borden County effectively worked a pressured offense and defense to win 66-51.

Overton was on fire during the game. She netted an impressive 30 points for Coahoma.

“The first quarter we played extremely well,” Kinnear said. “We were up but their pressure just wears you down and makes you do things you wouldn’t do before. Losing by 15 points to a 10th ranked state team, I’ll take that.”
