Julia Cox shoots 95 to help Bulldogettes to fourth place

Tanner Purchell led the Bulldogs to a third place finish at the Coahoma High School Invitational golf meet held at Comanche Trail Golf Course on Tuesday.

Playing in soggy conditions, the Coahoma freshman shot a team-best of 82 over 18 holes of play. Ky Kemper also had a stand-out day on the links for the Bulldogs. He penciled in a score of 88. A.J. Gutierrez, Cutter Atkins, and Nick Gonzales rounded out the Bulldogs sold performance. Gutierrez carded a round of 103 while Atkins and Gonzales scored 107 and 116 respectively.

The Coahoma team ended with a mark of 380, just seven strokes behind Wall. Clyde came in first with a score of 330. Rounding out the top five teams were Forsan and Winters with marks of 382 and 389 respectively.

Individually, Coahoma’s Jonathon Schneider, Rance Redden, and Rowdy Atkins played well on Tuesday. Schneider fired off a round of 105 while Redden shot 127 and Atkins turned in a score of 100.

On Monday, Julia Cox led the Bulldogettes team in the Coahoma girls tournament also held at the Comanche Trail Park Golf Course. 

The high school junior, who placed second in the Forsan meet held last week, shot a round of 95. She was followed by teammates Makayla Chavez with a score of 107 and Providence Dickson, who carded a round of 108. Hartlie Smithie and Zoie Joslin rounded out the Bulldogette team with marks of 116 and 120 respectively.

As a team, the Coahoma girls team finished fourth with a score of 426 and three strokes behind Slaton at 423. Clyde came in first with a mark of 393 edging out Forsan by 17 strokes. Denver City rounded out the top five with a score of 454. 

The Coahoma golf team is off to a great start to the season. Last week, the girls team of Cox, Joslin, Chavez, and Smithie finished the Forsan Invitational in second place. The boys team of Kemper, Atkins, Aaron Turnbough, Gonzales, and Purcell finished fourth out of nine teams.

Next: Coahoma travels to Baird to play in the Jim Ned High School tournament at the Shady Oaks Golf Club. The girls meet is on March 16 and the boys play on March 18.
